In response to media enquiries on cases of chickenpox in Hong Kong in recent months, a spokesman for the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health said there were 2 184 cases reported between August and October this year, a decrease of 145 cases as compared with the corresponding period of 2006.
The spokesman said chickenpox occurred throughout the year with peaks from November to February.
“As Hong Kong is entering the peak season of chickenpox, members of the public should maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene. They should keep their hands clean and wash them properly,” the spokesman said.
He added that the CHP would send letters to pre-primary institutions, primary and secondary schools to remind them on the preventive measures of chickenpox.
“Pamphlets on chickenpox will be made available at all maternal and child health centres to alert parents,” the spokesman said.
He pointed out that chickenpox vaccine was available in Hong Kong and about 90 per cent of people who got vaccination would acquire immunity.
“Parents can approach their family doctors for further advice,” he added.
